SR Boys Golf

Golf is the third longest continuous sport at Crookston High School behind football and basketball. The 1939 Optimist stated: “Golf was started in Central in 1936, with the Pirates placing fourth in the district tournament. In 1938 they ranked second. This year they have Ernotte Hiller, University of Minnesota 1937-38 golf co-captain, as coach.”

The Optimist tracked the early history of the sport in other issues.

In 1941, “Golf, the youngest sport, began in 1936 but has already won honors with the 1939 region championship and the 1940 district championship.” The 1949 Optimist said “The Crookston golf team won their way into the state tournament by virtue of a four stroke win over Bemidji in the regional tourney. They took a one up victory over Thief River Falls in the district tournament. In their two dual meets, the golfers copped victories over Bemidji by eleven strokes and also over Thief River Falls.” The 1950 team, under Coach Pat Turner “. . . . . , Captain Everett Eide, Art Miller, Glenn Hansen, and Mylan Haugen, was the only district entry, won second honors in the region, and made a good showing in the state meet.” The coach in 1952 was Al Droen. The Optimist stated . . . “Undefeated in all competition, the Central golfers, Coached by Al Droen, lost to Bemidji in the Regional finals although they had previously defeated them. Glenn Hansen’s score in region competition sent him to the state tourney in Minneapolis.”
