SR Girls Golf

The 1972 Optimist had the first mention of a girls' golf team. The first team members were: Sally Dahlgren, Becky Anderson, Lorraine Miller, Shirley Seddon, Terry Williams and Julie Gumlia. Two meets were held, a triangular in Detroit Lakes and home dual with Detroit Lakes. Leslie Siege was the first coach.

In the second year of the program under the supervision of Coach Bette Jacobson, the 1974 Optimist said: “The golfers won the three meets (Grand Forks, Thief River Falls, Crookston) in which they participated. The highlight of the season came when the girls took home the first place trophy in a twelve-school meet in Grand Forks.”

In 1974, the team had 10 meets, of which they won 7. Julie Gumlia, who won a women's state amateur championship while in high school, medaled 7 times. The following year, Kari Opgrand was medalist in 5 of 8 meets.

Gumlia and Opgrand never had the opportunity to participate at the State level as Golf was a Fall Sport until the Spring of 1977 when the first State Tournament was held.

In 1996, Jenny Bruun won Crookston High School's only State Golf Championship by capturing the Class A Crown.
