Les Dreschel


L. E. Drechsel was head football coach for the Crookston Pirates for 21 years (1971-92). His successful career record was 259 wins,102 losses and 9 ties accumulated at four Minnesota high schools: Parkers Prairie, Ada, Crookston and Red Lake Falls. 

“Drex”, as he was widely known, was a 1951 Fergus Falls High School graduate where he was a football and basketball standout for the Otters, playing quarterback and linebacker in the fall and guard in the winter.

After high school, Drex attended Bemidji State, where he lettered in Football from 1951through 1954. He was named All-NIC Football, 1953 and 1954.

From 1955 to 1957, he was head football and assistant basketball coach at Parkers Prairie. After two years in the U.S. Army, he coached at Ada as head football, head track, assistant basketball, baseball as well as athletic director. In 1971, he took his skills to Crookston.

At Crookston High School, Coach Drechsel won the 1980 state football championship.

In addition to football, Drex served as head track coach for 8 years, assistant basketball coach for 3 years and was an assistant coach on the 1974 state track champion. He became athletic director in 1981 and continued in that position until his retirement in 1992.

After a year off from coaching, he became the Red Lake Falls head football coach and held that position for a number of years. Les Drechsel died in 2000 at the age of 67. The “Les Drechsel Memorial Scholarship” is given each spring to a Crookston High School graduate.

Les had a number of coaching honors, including: Minnesota Football Association State Coach of the Year in 1980, head coach of the outstate all-star football team in 1981, Region 8 Coach of Year in 1967 and 1973, Minnesota Football Association President in 1970-71 and a number of region and local awards.

Drex was inducted into Bemidji State Hall of Fame in 1979, the Fergus Falls Hall of Fame in 1990, the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1992, the Minnesota Football Coaches Association in 1993 and the Crookston High School Hall of Fame in 2006.
