SR Basketball

These records were compiled by Greg Garmen, Carl Hunt, Katie Dillabough and Angela Lindsay. The information was provided by Greg Garmen, Herb Hasz and Marshall Olson.

Because the History of Boys' Basketball is over 100 years old, new information is continuing to be found. If you know of any other information in the form of newspaper clippings, end of the year handouts from a coach or scrapbooks, or if you find any errors, contact the link below.

The first recorded mention of Boys' Basketball, was in the "The Knocker", which was the Annual produced by the Senior Class of 1905. "The Knocker" reported, in the section devoted to Athletics, that during their Junior year (1903-04), "Not much was done in the High School during the Junior year. There was plenty of material, but a good organizer was wanting. The only games played were by the Basket Ball Teams with Warren. The boys won, though the girls lost, and as boys' game decided the championship of Red River Valley, the Warren team presented us with a handsome silk banner, which now adorns the north wall of the Senior room."

There is no other documentation of Boys' Basketball until the December 1909 issue of "The Shadow", a monthly student produced newspaper. It read, "The first basket ball game of this season was played Friday evening, December 10th with Argyle High in the Germania Hall. This is the first game of basket ball that our boys (reference to the Class of 1910) have ever played, as Crookston has not had a basket ball team for a number of years back, . . ."

It appears that 1909-10 was the beginning of Boys' Basketball at Crookston High School, even though it was suspended during the 1915-16 and the 1916-17 seasons. Between the years of 1912 to 1915, little information has been found but research continues.

A common theme throughout the early years is inadequate facilities for practice and games. This continued until the mid 1930's when an addition was made to the 1914 Crookston High School that included a gym.
