David Barnum


A graduate of Minneapolis Washburn High School and Bemidji State University, Dave Barnum was the Girls’ Track and Field Head Coach for 35 years, ending with his retirement in 2009. For two years he was also Boys' Track and Field Coach, as they were paired with the Girls.

His teams won 12 Sub-Section Championships, 9 Sectional Championships and 4 Section Championships in the Minnesota True Team competition. They also had 124 1st place finishes at various track and field meets.

He had 99 athletes participate at the State competition with 4 State Individual Champions and 4 State Individual Second Places. Ninety-four athletes won All-State Awards.

In 1995 and 1999, Coach Barnum was the Minnesota Class A State Girls’ Track and Field Coach of the Year. He was Section 8A Track Coach of the Year in 1988, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003 and his last year of coaching in 2009. He was honored by the Section 8 Athletic Directors nine times and was the District 31/Sub-Section 8A-3 Coach of the Year numerous times and was the Crookston Lions Coaching Excellence Award winner in 1985.

He was active in the State Track and Field Association as a representative at various levels of competition.

Barney, as he was known to his peers, also coached junior high football for 18 years and was the Girls’ Cross Country Coach for 19 years. His Cross Country teams had 25 State Participants during his career. 

He was elected to the Crookston High School Hall of Fame in 2016.
