Why Early Childhood Screening?

The Minnesota Department of Education, Health and Human Services say: "To assure school readiness screen early starting at age three."

What to Expect 
This information is for young children and their families. Read this with your child so they know what to expect when they come to Early Childhood Screening. 

Welcome to Screening

When you come to screening, you will receive a backpack with school supplies you get to take home after screening.

Paperwork

Paperwork will be mailed to your home. Please bring the completed paperwork with you to your appointment.

Height and Weight

You will be measured and weighed to see how much you have grown!

Developmental Screening

Then you will go with a teacher who will do fun activities with you. You will work with blocks, use a pencil, and look at pictures.

Vision Screening

Your eyes will be checked. A grown-up points to a picture on the wall and you will point to the one on the table that matches.

Hearing Screening

Your hearing will be checked. You get to put on headphones like big kids wear when they listen to music. Listen hard and when you hear a little sound through the headphones, raise your hand.

Speech & Language Screening

You will look at and talk about pictures and objects with a grown-up.

Health, History, & Exit Interview

Finally, the adults will talk about how well you did today and how much fun you had!

Screening IS :

• A way to identify possible conditions that affect a child's ability to learn and develop.

• Intended to increase parent understanding of their child's development, school readi­ness, and early childhood opportunities in our community.

Screening IS NOT :

• A predictor of future intellectual ability

• Designed to generate diagnostic labels like "learning disabled"

• An IQ test
